This petite corner bluestone might just be the Swiss army knife of Melbourne hospitality – an espresso bar and brunchy cafe that converts into a cosy wine and dinner destination and guesthouse by night. One customer could be having impeccably fresh oysters and a martini while a solo diner at the window tucks into cake and coffee with an oversized design magazine.
The menus are thoughtful and refined. Daytime egg and anchovy toast might as well be the Melbourne coat of arms, while the evening’s garlicky cannellini beans with lemon and herbs is a showstopper fashioned from simple ingredients.
Pate en croute is a wonderful tumble of chunky pork and chicken in cognac jelly with sturdy pastry and bracing marjoram seeded mustard. A fat squiggle of salty white chocolate cream with macerated figs and you’re not going to want to leave.
Good to know: Stand at the bar for a $3 espresso.
