The wine list is legendary, the food plated with perspective, and on any given Melbourne night it feels like half of Fitzroy passes the windows. Everyone knows Marion. Over its 11 years, the flatbread and fantasy-grade fromage blanc has hit Melbourne-emblem status, while snacking on octopus toast has become a rite of passage.
Staff might put something crisp and Portuguese in your glass, but there are plenty of non-alc thrills, too; the “Passionate Last Word” making a strong case for ordering a mocktail at a wine bar. As per the wine bar dictum, it’s a case of the smaller the plate, the higher the reward: tuna crudo hammered thin and enlivened with yuzu vinaigrette, or perhaps scallops scattered with crisp prosciutto.
Rosy rounds of O’Connor sirloin and another Marion icon, rigate in vodka sauce, might follow. Then comes a vermouth flan seemingly engineered to accelerate both diabetes and alcoholism. Young parents and their toddlers co-exist peacefully with the Gertrude Street “it” crowd lolling about in the afternoon sun – proof this is a paragon of the form.
Best for: A wine-soothed conversation punctuated with approachable cooking.
