You can now enter via a sign-lit front door, but this low-key 18-seat restaurant reflects its origins as a fortnightly dinner party in chef-owner Helly Raichura’s home. A small front bar offers a snack menu for walk-ins; the middle room’s communal table is the heart of the action; and the minimalist back room overlooks a plant-filled courtyard.

The set menu, of five or 10 courses, showcases India’s regional culinary traditions, cleverly updated with native Australian ingredients. Thus, a street snack of crunchy spiced noodles called bhujiya gets an aromatic zing from mountain pepper. Peas atop a crisp papad wafer are spiked with zesty lemon myrtle, while an earthy baati dumpling is filled with fragrant kangaroo mince.

A main of slow-cooked “jungle meat” – Meredith Dairy goat – honours its Rajasthani roots with a rich, concentrated sauce of meat juices, yoghurt and red chillies. Eager to please service, a thoughtful wine list and pretty plating makes this a memorable experience.
