Labor MPs want to find a way to keep ATO credit card payments
The surcharge ban and the Tax Office’s resultant refusal to accept credit cards dominated the political brawl in Canberra on Tuesday.
First reported 3 hours ago · latest update 3 hours agoLabor MP Jerome Laxale, who has long advocated for the surcharge policy, tried to inject context into the debate by saying some banks had reduced their surcharge rate and that about 5 per cent of small business owners used credit cards to pay tax bills.
“Let’s not take away from the importance of this reform: 90 per cent of all businesses always absorbed those costs, and they now have access to cheaper merchant charges because of this reform,” he said on News24.
“So there are cheaper costs for businesses out there.”
Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said banks should not be able to ask for a fee to provide point of sale services.
“These are banks making billions of dollars in profits every year, and small businesses are already paying account-keeping fees and a range of other fees directly to their banks,” she told the Seven Network.
