NASA’s Perseverance rover has set a new record for the longest distance traveled by a vehicle on the surface of any celestial body other than Earth. The achievement was announced by the agency on Tuesday.
Since its landing on Mars in February 2021, the rover has accumulated a total of 28.1 miles, equivalent to 45.2 kilometres, of driving across the planet’s terrain. This distance surpasses the previous off‑planet driving record held by earlier Mars rovers.
The milestone comes 5½ years into Perseverance’s operational mission. Throughout this period, the rover has navigated a variety of geological features while conducting scientific investigations.
Perseverance’s primary objective is to assess whether Mars ever possessed environmental conditions suitable for microbial life. The rover is equipped with instruments to analyze rock and soil samples, study atmospheric composition, and search for biosignatures.
The record underscores the durability and mobility of the rover’s engineering, enabling it to traverse extensive distances while carrying out its exploration goals on the Red Planet.

Nasa’s Perseverance rover has surpassed Opportunity by covering 45.22 km on Mars in five and a half years. The rover broke this record on October 11, during its 2,006th Martian day of the mission. Perseverance's autonomous navigation has been vital, accounting for over 90 percent of its driving distance. Additionally, it has discovered signs of ancient microbial activity and explored geological features within Jezero Crater.
