Union Minister of State L Murugan has resigned from his ministerial post and from his seat in the Rajya Sabha, indicating that he will devote his full attention to party work in Tamil Nadu. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Murugan requested to be relieved of his responsibilities as a minister and to relinquish his parliamentary membership.
Murugan, who held the Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios, said his decision was driven by a desire to strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party’s presence at the grassroots level in Tamil Nadu. He expressed an intention to travel across villages and streets in the state, meet party workers and the general public, and expand the party’s organisational base.
The minister also linked his move to the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections, stating that he wants to help the party secure a larger share of seats from Tamil Nadu in that contest. He indicated that focusing on the state’s ground‑level dynamics would better position the BJP for the future electoral challenge.
Murugan noted that Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu, which was met with enthusiasm and affection from the local population, reinforced his resolve to shift his focus to the state. He thanked the Prime Minister for his support and expressed confidence that his departure from the Union Cabinet would enable him to contribute more effectively to the party’s objectives in Tamil Nadu.
