White House says US ambassador to Greece Guilfoyle asked to resign Reuters
First reported 1 hour ago · latest update 11 minutes agoThe White House announced on October 13 that it has asked U.S. ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. Press Secretary Katie Zacharia said the administration had requested her departure, describing Guilfoyle as “a wonderful asset to the team” and adding that the government wishes her well. It was not immediately clear whether Guilfoyle had formally submitted her resignation.
Guilfoyle, a Trump appointee confirmed as ambassador in 2025, has faced a series of allegations reported in recent media coverage. The Wall Street Journal detailed claims that she solicited or accepted money, travel and other benefits from private individuals while offering to use her diplomatic position and contacts within the U.S. administration to advance their interests. One report said she sought $100,000 from Trump donor Eric Deters before her confirmation and urged him not to put any discussion of the payment in writing.
Additional allegations include accepting private travel and hospitality from Greek businessmen and using her role to promote their commercial interests, as well as encouraging Balkan governments to work with those businessmen. The Journal also reported that Guilfoyle allegedly threatened a host‑country official and accepted gifts that could be viewed as improper under diplomatic standards.
President Donald Trump expressed displeasure with the reports, stating on October 12 that he was “not happy” and that the administration was “looking at it.” A senior U.S. official cited by the Associated Press said that both Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were “extremely pissed off” by the alleged conduct and expected to decide on her future within the week.
White House officials have not provided further details about any investigation or potential legal implications. The request for resignation follows the publication of the allegations and the president’s public comments, but no formal findings have been released.
The ambassador’s status remains pending, and the White House has not indicated whether a replacement will be named immediately. The administration’s statement emphasizes a desire to move forward while acknowledging the seriousness of the concerns raised.
