Passengers who were onboard a Perth Qantas flight riddled with bed bugs have spoken out, recalling how they woke to screaming and bugs crawling on the windows.

The drama began on Friday when passengers on QF5 travelling from Perth to Rome complained about being bitten by bugs, forcing the cancellation of the return flight to allow for cleaning.

Hailey Bagnall was on the flight, which began in Sydney.

“They were crawling over our belongings, our clothing, our Qantas blankets, they were evening crawling along the window,” she told 9 News Perth.

Despite the complaints from passengers on the Sydney to Perth leg of the flight, the plane continued from Perth direct to Rome.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “We sincerely apologise to customers for the cancellation of Saturday’s Rome to Perth service, which allowed our engineers and maintenance teams to carry out a deep clean of the aircraft after an issue was identified on a small number of economy seats.”
