Second Ebola case confirmed in Kenya
The patient is related to a man who died in Nairobi last week – thought to be the country’s first-ever case

Kenya’s Ministry of Health has confirmed a second case of Ebola in the country, occurring approximately one week after the nation reported its first-ever infection. The patient is a 39-year-old man who is a close relative of the initial case. According to health officials, the man was already in quarantine when he began exhibiting symptoms including fever, fatigue, and joint pain on Tuesday.
The first confirmed case involved a citizen who had been residing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). That individual traveled to Kenya and subsequently died at a Nairobi hospital two days after arrival. The movement of the first patient has prompted questions regarding regional border screening protocols, as the individual reportedly drove from the DRC to Uganda before flying to Nairobi.
The circumstances surrounding the first patient's transit have led to diplomatic friction. Because the border between the DRC and Uganda has been closed since May due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak, it remains unclear how the individual was able to cross into Uganda. Officials from the Ugandan government have denied the presence of the virus within their borders and have requested that the country not be implicated in the transit of the infected individual.
In response to the situation, Kenya’s Director-General for Health, Patrick Amoth, stated that a meeting is being organized with representatives from the DRC, Uganda, and the Africa CDC to investigate how the first patient was able to travel through three countries without being detected.
Following the confirmation of these cases, Kenya has intensified its national response to the disease. Authorities are working to manage the current situation while addressing the gaps in screening and surveillance that allowed the initial case to enter the country undetected.
