First reported 1 day ago · latest update 1 day agoRussia has nearly completed the construction of a major new facility designed for launching jet-powered drones. Located in the south-western Rostov region, the site was transformed from an empty field into a complex spanning an area equivalent to approximately 126 soccer pitches in just six weeks. Satellite imagery captured between August 31 and October 14 documents the rapid development of the infrastructure.
The expansion of this site comes as Russia increases its reliance on jet-powered attack drones in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. These weapons, which are capable of reaching speeds of up to 600 kilometers per hour, have proven difficult for Ukrainian forces to intercept. As the war enters its fifth year, expectations remain that these aerial attacks will intensify throughout the winter months.
Analysis of the facility indicates that it is equipped to launch the Geran-4 and Geran-5 models, which represent the latest iteration of Russian jet-powered drone technology. The western edge of the complex features eight platforms specifically designed for launch rails. This addition expands Russia’s existing network of at least 11 fixed launch sites currently used to conduct drone operations against Ukraine.
The speed at which the facility was erected highlights Russia’s ability to rapidly deploy and scale its offensive capabilities. By establishing this new base, the military adds to its capacity to conduct sustained drone strikes, further complicating defensive efforts in the region. The project serves as a significant development in the tactical infrastructure supporting the ongoing hostilities.
