20 Missing In US Grand Canyon Flash Floods, Video Shows Massive Destruction

A powerful flash flood swept through the Grand Canyon in Arizona on Saturday afternoon, leaving multiple hikers missing and prompting a large-scale evacuation and rescue operation. The National Park Service stated it was seeking information regarding at least 15 people who may be unaccounted for following the deluge. However, other reports indicate that the number of missing hikers could be as high as 20 or more.

The sudden flooding was triggered by intense, localized rainfall over the region's rocky terrain. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Justin Johndrow, between half an inch and one inch of rain fell in approximately 30 minutes. Because of the hard, rocky ground, most of the rainfall ran off instantly, sending a rapid surge of water into the canyon's drainage systems.

The deluge began at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time in Bright Angel Creek, which descends from the North Rim of the canyon and flows into the Colorado River. A massive wall of chocolate-brown water, mud, and debris ripped through the area. Footage from the scene captured torrents of water carrying logs, vegetation, large boulders, and other debris downstream, significantly altering the local landscape.

The force of the floodwaters wiped out several footbridges over Bright Angel Creek, presenting immediate hazards to anyone in the area. In response to the destruction, park officials closed the Bright Angel Campground and sections of the North Kaibab Trail. These areas remain closed while emergency crews and park officials continue to survey the extent of the damage.
