China warns of consequences over Taiwan's participation in Pacific Islands Forum

China’s special envoy to the Pacific, Qian Bo, warned that Beijing would impose “consequences” after Taiwan’s foreign minister attended the opening ceremony of this year’s Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders’ meeting in Palau. Qian told reporters that China had “serious concerns” about the space being given to Taiwan at the gathering.

Taiwan’s foreign minister, Lin Chia‑lung, appeared with a large delegation of officials, business representatives and journalists in Koror, Palau’s commercial centre, for the ceremony that marked the formal start of the forum. The event drew hundreds of politicians, officials, non‑government organisations and media representatives to the Micronesian nation.

Taiwan maintains diplomatic relations with Palau, which allows it greater latitude at this year’s PIF meeting. In addition to the political presence, Taipei has brought a sizable business delegation to Palau to expand commercial and development ties. Lin is scheduled to meet the leaders of Taiwan’s three remaining Pacific allies and has also held informal discussions with other dignitaries, including senior U.S. official Christopher Landau.

The appearance of Taiwan’s foreign minister is notable because participation by the island is usually tightly controlled by the PIF secretariat. China’s warning reflects its broader policy of opposing any international recognition or official engagement with Taiwan, particularly in regional forums that involve Pacific Island nations.

The Pacific Islands Forum continues its agenda despite the diplomatic tension, with leaders from member states proceeding with scheduled meetings and discussions while monitoring the diplomatic sensitivities raised by China’s statement.
