Trump administration reportedly planning $4-5 million for European media grants

The United States administration under President Donald Trump is planning to allocate 4 million dollars to support right-wing media in Europe. This funding is part of a broader package of at least 25 million dollars intended for civil society groups working on conservative causes across the European region.

The State Department notified Congress of its intent to allocate these funds on August 21. The planned allocation divides the 4 million dollars into specific programs aimed at media and journalism.

A portion of the funding, totaling 3 million dollars, is earmarked for a program designed to document and analyze democratic backsliding in Europe. This initiative will focus on how backsliding relates to mass and illegal migration, the independent media landscape, and the legislative agendas of supranational entities.

The remaining 1 million dollars is intended to establish a consortium of independent journalists. This consortium will cover a range of specific issues in Europe, including national sovereignty, natural rights, and religious freedom.

The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour has stated that the funding is designed to strengthen transatlantic ties and promote free speech. However, the grants risk escalating tensions between Washington and European governments, some of which have previously accused the U.S. government of interfering in their domestic politics.

The funding initiative comes at a time when several European countries are preparing for elections over the next couple of years. It also coincides with the administration's open support for populist right-wing and far-right political parties across Europe.
