First reported 2 weeks ago · latest update 1 week agoPoland is actively working to build the largest land army in Europe while shifting its defense procurement strategy. The country is pivoting toward domestic and central European defense manufacturers to secure its supply chains. This transition aims to reduce dependency on distant suppliers who may struggle to rapidly increase production during times of crisis.
This strategic shift is reflected in Poland's defense budget allocations. Polish spending on defense procurement from domestic companies, including joint ventures with other central European firms, has experienced a nearly four-fold increase since 2022. Last year, this domestic spending reached 30.4 billion zlotys, which is equivalent to approximately $8.15 billion.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has accelerated defense spending across the European continent. For Poland, however, the situation carries heightened urgency. Sharing a direct border with Ukraine, Polish officials view Russia as an existential threat, making national defense and military modernization a paramount priority for the government.
Polish officials have emphasized the strategic importance of domestic manufacturing in their military expansion. Deputy State Assets Minister Konrad Golota highlighted this focus, noting that the country is building Europe's largest land army and that manufacturing military equipment within Poland has become increasingly vital for the nation's defense strategy.
To support this transition, state-linked Polish defense firms have significantly increased their capital spending over the past year. This shift is opening up new opportunities for defense contractors throughout the central European region. Overall, Poland is projected to spend approximately €53 billion, or about $61.45 billion, on core defense expenditures this year, positioning it among the top spenders in the European Union.
