Germany has formally accused Russia of being behind an attempted attack with an explosive‑laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. The incident was discovered on 4 August when a drone carrying an explosive device was found near Ukrainian cargo planes operating from the airport. Investigators said the device did not detonate because its detonator was faulty, and they suspect a second drone may have collided with a cargo aircraft in the vicinity. A third drone was reportedly located about ten days later, also near the airport.
Leipzig/Halle Airport serves both the German military and NATO allies for the transport of military goods and is a base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines, which handles the majority of the country’s aerial cargo. The proximity of the drones to Ukrainian cargo flights raised concerns about the potential impact on Ukraine’s supply lines.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as fitting the “well‑established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe” and warned that Germany could be targeted again. He noted that the method of using drones with explosives aligns with tactics previously attributed to Russian actors in other European incidents.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that, in response to the attack, Germany would close the Russian consulate in Bonn and terminate the contract for the Russian House in Berlin, a venue that has been cited by observers as a hub for espionage and Russian propaganda activities.
Security experts had previously speculated that Russia might be responsible for the drone plot, although the Russian government has consistently denied any involvement in the Leipzig incident.
The German government’s attribution of the attack to Russia follows statements from multiple ministries and aligns with the broader assessment that the operation was part of a coordinated hybrid threat, while Russia continues to reject the accusations.
