Families Hold Symbolic Funerals for Nepal Flood Victims

The death toll from devastating flash floods in the Nepal-Tibet region has reached at least 1,100 to 1,243, according to varying reports. As rescue operations continue around the clock, approximately 3,900 people remain unaccounted for. Among the missing are hundreds of workers believed to be trapped in tunnels and underground power facilities along the Bhotekoshi River.

Authorities have begun conducting temporary burials for recovered victims as search teams, including the Nepali Army and police, navigate heavy rain and thick debris. To assist with the identification of the deceased, officials have urged relatives of the missing to provide DNA samples at the Nepal Police Hospital in Maharajgunj or at local District Police Offices.

International support has arrived to bolster recovery and forensic efforts. A 19-member forensic team from India is currently working alongside the Nepal Police on DNA analysis. Additionally, specialized teams and equipment have been deployed from China, Singapore, and South Korea to aid in the ongoing search and identification process.

Amid the crisis, families of those still missing have begun holding symbolic funerals as their homes and loved ones remain lost to the disaster. Government officials have noted that the scale of the destruction is significant, with estimates suggesting that rebuilding costs could reach as high as $5 billion.

In response to the catastrophe, leadership has emphasized the need to address the disaster's connection to climate change on the international stage. As of the most recent briefings, authorities confirmed that nearly 12,000 people have been successfully rescued, while recovery operations for those trapped in flooded infrastructure remain a primary focus.
