Two workers rescued from Nepal hydropower tunnel following floods

Two workers have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal after being trapped for 10 days following severe flooding in the region. The men were extracted from the mud-clogged structure by rescue teams on Friday, marking a significant development in the ongoing search efforts across the Himalayan nation.

The Nepali army confirmed the rescue through social media footage released on September 4. Following their extraction, both survivors were transported by air to a hospital in Kathmandu to receive medical treatment.

The rescue has provided authorities with hope that others may still be found alive. Officials estimate that more than a dozen individuals remain trapped within the same tunnel, and there are concerns that hundreds of other workers could still be missing in tunnels connected to various hydropower projects throughout the remote region.

The flooding, which swept through Nepal in late August, has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis. Current reports indicate that the death toll from the disaster has surpassed 1,200 people.

In addition to those confirmed deceased, search and rescue operations are continuing for more than 5,000 people who remain missing. Efforts to clear debris and reach those trapped in infrastructure projects continue as the scale of the disaster remains extensive.
