Trump envoys plan visits to Russia and Ukraine for renewed peace talks

Negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are reportedly planning visits to Russia and Ukraine this weekend as part of a renewed effort to broker peace talks. The diplomatic mission, which has not been officially confirmed, follows previous engagement between the representatives and Russian leadership. In January, the team held four hours of discussions with President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.

Reports indicate that while the visit to Russia is scheduled, discussions regarding a trip to Kyiv remain ongoing. A potential date of September 6 has been discussed for the Ukraine leg of the journey, which would mark the first time the negotiators have visited the country. According to reports, there is internal friction regarding this itinerary, as Russian officials have expressed opposition to the visit to Kyiv and are attempting to influence the travel plans.

The diplomatic push comes as the conflict, now in its fourth and a half year, remains at a stalemate. The positions of the two nations remain fundamentally opposed, creating a significant barrier to a resolution. President Putin has consistently maintained that any peace agreement must include the cession of additional Ukrainian territory, while the Ukrainian government has rejected these demands, characterizing them as equivalent to a surrender.

The last round of negotiations mediated by the United States occurred in February. That meeting took place shortly before the United States and Israel initiated a war against Iran, an event that shifted the focus of international diplomacy. As the current envoys attempt to restart the peace process, they face the challenge of bridging the vast gulf between the two warring parties in what is considered the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
