German rocket reaches space as Europe enters satellite launch race - Reuters

German startup Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit on 5 September from the Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway, marking the first commercial flight to reach space from continental Europe. The uncrewed vehicle, designed for small and medium‑sized payloads, carried five small satellites and an in‑flight technological experiment.

The launch represents a milestone for the European launch industry, providing the continent with greater independent access to space. Norway’s minister of industry and commerce, Cecilie Myrseth, said the ability to launch satellites from Andøya strengthens both Norwegian and European security amid a turbulent geopolitical environment.

The flight was Isar’s second attempt; its first launch 18 months earlier ended when the rocket fell into the sea and exploded. The successful ascent demonstrates progress in the company’s development program and its ambition to serve the growing market for satellite missions.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the Andøya launch site in March, underscoring Germany’s interest in expanding Europe’s space capabilities as the global order shifts. Officials highlighted the launch as a step toward greater European autonomy in space operations, traditionally dominated by the United States and other established providers.

The Spectrum rocket’s achievement places Europe among a limited group of nations capable of delivering payloads to orbit from their own territory, potentially increasing competition in the satellite launch market and offering new options for commercial and governmental customers.
