Anak Krakatau eruption disrupts flights, schools, and fishing in Indonesia
An eruption of Indonesia's Mount Anak Krakatau has led to the suspension of operations at six airports, affecting over 200 flights. The volcanic activity has also resulted in the closure of local schools and the suspension of fishing activities in the region.
First reported 1 week ago · latest update 1 week agoAn eruption from the Anak Krakatau volcano sent a plume of ash across western Indonesia on Thursday, prompting authorities to issue widespread safety warnings. The ash cloud drifted over the capital region, reducing visibility and raising concerns about air quality in the surrounding provinces.
In response, aviation officials suspended all flights to and from Jakarta, extending a halt that had originally been scheduled to end at 5:30 a.m. The suspension affected 209 scheduled flights, grounding both domestic and international services and leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
The eruption also led to the temporary closure of schools in the affected districts. Educational institutions were ordered to remain closed until conditions improved, as officials warned that ash accumulation could pose health risks to students and staff.
Fishing activities along the coast were likewise halted. Local authorities advised fishermen to keep their vessels in port, citing the potential for ash contamination of the water and the danger of reduced visibility for navigation.
Emergency response teams continue to monitor the volcano’s activity and the dispersion of ash. Authorities have indicated that restrictions will be reassessed regularly, and they are prepared to lift the bans once air quality and safety conditions return to acceptable levels.
