Two people have died after a light plane crashed and sparked a grass fire at Logan, south of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to a property at Musch Road at Stockleigh shortly after 11am today.

The Beech A36 Bonanza aircraft took off from Archerfield Airport less than 10 minutes earlier.

The crash sparked a grass fire, which took eight crews about an hour to contain.

Logan district officer Chief Superintendent Mel Adams said the scene was "confronting".

"Our care at the moment is to our emergency service responders and of course the family when we can make contact with them," she said.

Ms Adams urged any witnesses to contact police immediately.

"Anybody that may have witnessed the aircraft hit the ground, it was close to a roadway, please as a matter of priority contact police."

In a statement the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said it had commenced an investigation into the incident.

A team of three transport safety investigators specialising in aircraft operations, maintenance and engineering have been sent to the site.

The ATSB said a preliminary report on the incident would be published in about eight weeks.
