Bruce Davis, Longtime Chief Executive of Film Academy, Dies at 83

Bruce Davis, the longtime chief executive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has died at the age of 83. His wife, Joann, confirmed that he passed away on Saturday following a battle with leukemia.

Davis began his tenure with the Academy in 1981. Over the following years, he rose through the organization's ranks before being appointed as executive director in 1989. He held this leadership position for more than two decades, serving in the role until 2011.

During his lengthy career, Davis became a central figure in the administration of the Academy and the oversight of its various initiatives. His deep involvement with the institution extended beyond his administrative duties, as he maintained a long-term interest in the history and development of the organization.

In 2022, Davis authored a comprehensive history of the institution titled The Academy and the Award. The book is regarded as an authoritative account of the organization’s evolution and the history of its signature honors.

Davis is remembered for his significant contributions to the Academy throughout his 30-year association with the group. He leaves behind a legacy defined by his extensive administrative service and his efforts to document the history of the film industry's most prominent organization.
