John Mulaney is looking to get into the spy game.

The comedian is in talks to star in a Get Smart reimagining that is in early development at Warner Bros., The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Seth Grahame-Smith (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t) is writing the screenplay for the project that counts Charles Roven and Andrew Lazar as producers.

Mel Brooks and Buck Henry created the original spy spoof series Get Smart, which debuted on NBC in 1965 — three years after the debut of the first Sean Connery-led James Bond film that kicked off the franchise. Don Adams starred as Maxwell Smart, while Barbara Feldon and Edward Platt rounded out the show’s cast.

Peter Segal directed 2008’s feature adaptation of the property, Get Smart, which starred Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson. It collected $230 million globally, and a sequel was in development before going dead.

In his review of the 2008 movie for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Kirk Honeycutt wrote, “This is a slap-dash effort whose producers threw money and stunts onscreen instead of the satirical gags and one-liners that made the old spy spoof so memorable.”

Mulaney established himself as a writer on Saturday Night Live before releasing such Netflix comedy specials as John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch and Baby J. Along with voicing a main character on Big Mouth, the star has accrued a number of acting credits of late, including a recurring part on The Bear and a role in David O. Russell’s forthcoming John Madden biopic.

Deadline was first to report about the reboot.
