Sudhanshu, the operator of the paying guest accommodation housed in the building that collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, has been arrested on Wednesday. This is the fifth arrest in connection with the building collapse. “Further examination is being conducted in the case and details will be shared in due course,” Delhi Police said.

At least seven people were killed after the five-storey building, which was being used as a private hostel for students, collapsed on Sunday afternoon. The building was located opposite Sri Venkateswara College in Dhaula Kuan. Several people were rescued from the rubble and taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.

Some of those rescued were reported to be in critical condition. The owner of the building, Hariram, was earlier arrested from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. His arrest came after the Delhi Police formed 10 teams to trace him. Police have registered a case at the South Campus police station against Ram and others under charges including culpable homicide, negligence in the upkeep of a structure and endangering the safety of others.

Five officials, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s South Zone Deputy Commissioner, were also suspended following the incident. The collapse took place while renovation work was underway in the basement of the nearly 50-year-old building.
