Apple Introduces Foldable iPhone - WSJ

Apple introduced its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, during a “Surprise and Shine” event held in Cupertino. The unveiling marked the company’s entry into the foldable market and added a new form factor to its flagship line.

The iPhone Duo is the first marquee device launched under Apple’s new chief executive officer, John Ternus. The leadership transition coincides with the company’s decision to expand its hardware portfolio beyond the traditional rectangular design that has defined the iPhone since its debut in 2007.

Apple described the Duo as “inspired by the versatility of iPad,” emphasizing the device’s ability to shift between compact and expanded usage modes. The company highlighted the flexibility of the design as a key differentiator from its existing smartphone lineup.

The device incorporates two screen panels that fold together, complemented by an additional front display. Apple said this configuration delivers the largest, most immersive screen size it has offered in a smartphone while also being its thinnest foldable to date.

By introducing a foldable model, Apple is moving away from the long‑standing rectangular silhouette that has characterized its phones for nearly two decades, signaling a willingness to experiment with new form factors in its flagship products.
