Elena Rybakina advanced to the semifinals of the US Open after defeating qualifier Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Kazakhstani player recovered from a first‑set loss, turning the match around with a dominant second set and a tightly contested third set in which she secured 11 of the next 15 points after the score reached 4‑4. She broke Zheng’s serve at a crucial moment and then held to close out the match.
The victory also propelled Rybakina to the top of the women’s singles rankings. With the WTA’s next update scheduled for Monday, September 14, she is set to replace Aryna Sabalenka as world No. 1. Rybakina acknowledged the ranking change, describing it as “just a number right now” and emphasizing her focus on winning the tournament.
Zheng, who entered the quarterfinals after a notable upset over Iga Swiatek, challenged Rybakina with powerful serves and aggressive play, especially in the opening set. Rybakina contended with bright sun and shadows at Arthur Ashe Stadium, as well as Zheng’s early aces, before finding her rhythm in the second set.
The win marks Rybakina’s first appearance in a US Open semifinal. She will meet the winner of the quarterfinal between Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva in the next round. After the match, Rybakina said she intends to recover, focus on her game and enjoy the upcoming matches.
