Jimmy Kimmel Moves James Talarico Interview to YouTube Citing FCC Pressure

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel announced that his scheduled interview with Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico will not air on television. Instead, the segment will be broadcast exclusively on YouTube. Kimmel attributed this decision to threats received from the Federal Communications Commission under the incoming Trump administration.

The interview was originally slated to air on ABC as part of Kimmel's regular television broadcast. However, due to the regulatory warnings, the network opted to bypass the traditional television airwaves. By moving the interview to the internet, the show aims to circumvent the strict broadcast regulations that govern over-the-air television networks.

The regulatory concerns are tied to equal-time rules and guidance from the federal agency, which is set to be led by FCC Chair Brendan Carr. These regulations require broadcast stations to provide equal opportunities to opposing political candidates, a rule that does not apply in the same manner to digital streaming platforms. The threat of regulatory action or challenges to broadcast licenses has prompted networks to tread carefully with political guests.

This situation marks the second time this year that Talarico has had a scheduled late-night television appearance diverted to an online platform due to regulatory concerns. In February, late-night host Stephen Colbert faced a similar situation when scheduling the Texas Democrat. Colbert informed his audience that CBS lawyers advised him they could not have Talarico on the television broadcast.

During that previous incident, Colbert explained that the network's legal team barred the broadcast appearance following guidance issued by Carr regarding political programming. Like Kimmel, Colbert ultimately chose to release the interview online to ensure the conversation could still be viewed by the public without violating broadcast standards or risking legal challenges for the network.
