The traditional kingdom of Tooro in western Uganda entered a succession dispute on Thursday following the death of its monarch, King Oyo Nyimba. The king’s passing, which was confirmed earlier this month, has left the royal household and the kingdom’s council of elders to determine his successor under customary law.
In Tooro, the selection of a new king traditionally involves consultation among the royal clan, the kingdom’s council of elders, and the late monarch’s immediate family. The process is guided by long‑standing customs that aim to ensure continuity and legitimacy of the throne.
Members of the royal clan convened and nominated a well‑known television news anchor as the preferred candidate to assume the throne. The choice was presented as a compromise that would blend modern public visibility with the kingdom’s heritage.
The late king’s family, however, rejected the clan’s nominee, stating that the candidate does not meet the established criteria for succession. Family representatives have called for a different candidate who, in their view, better aligns with the lineage and traditional requirements. The disagreement has halted the nomination process and prompted calls for further deliberation.
As the dispute continues, the kingdom’s council of elders is expected to mediate between the clan and the family to reach a consensus. No official appointment has been made, and the Tooro kingdom remains without a recognized monarch while the parties seek a resolution that respects both customary law and the wishes of the royal family.
