Russia sends relics of medieval prince to front lines

Bone fragments belonging to the medieval Russian prince Dmitry Donskoy have been transported to the front lines in Ukraine. The relics, specifically identified as fragments from the warrior’s sword hand, were dispatched as part of an effort by the Russian Orthodox Church to bolster the morale of Russian troops currently engaged in the conflict.

Dmitry Donskoy is a significant historical figure in Russia, best known for leading forces to a major victory against the Mongols in the 14th century. In 1988, he was canonized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church. His name also holds historical military significance, having been used to designate a Soviet tank column that was funded by the church during the Second World War.

The deployment of these relics represents the latest instance of the Russian Orthodox Church providing support for the ongoing war effort initiated by President Vladimir Putin. By sending the remains of a celebrated military leader and saint to the battlefield, the church aims to provide spiritual encouragement to soldiers currently stationed in the region.
