US Appeals Court Rejects Trump Administration Bid to Implement Mail-In Voting Restrictions

A U.S. Court of Appeals on Thursday rejected the Trump administration’s effort to enforce a new United States Postal Service rule that would tighten requirements for mail‑in voting ahead of the November congressional elections. The panel declined to grant the administration a preliminary injunction that would have allowed the rule to take effect before the election.

The contested rule would have imposed additional procedural steps on voters who choose to cast their ballots by mail, including stricter verification of signatures and tighter deadlines for processing ballots. The administration argued that the changes were necessary to safeguard the integrity of the election process.

The decision comes as the nation prepares for the upcoming mid‑term elections, in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate will be contested. Election officials and advocacy groups have expressed concerns that any alteration to mail‑in voting procedures so close to Election Day could create confusion among voters.

At the same time, the U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing a separate but related request from the administration seeking to implement similar restrictions nationwide. The high court’s pending consideration adds another layer of uncertainty to the legal landscape surrounding mail‑in voting rules.

With the appellate court’s ruling, the administration’s proposed changes remain blocked for the remainder of the election cycle, leaving existing mail‑in voting procedures in place for the November vote.
