Twenty‑five years after the coordinated hijackings that brought down the World Trade Center towers and struck the Pentagon, the militant network founded by Osama bin Laden remains a reference point for extremist groups worldwide. The 2001 attacks, carried out by al Qaeda operatives, marked the group’s most high‑profile act of violence and propelled it onto the global stage.
In the years that followed, al Qaeda expanded its reach by establishing a network of affiliated organizations across the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. These branches have carried out or inspired a series of attacks in various regions, extending the group’s influence far beyond its original base in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The organization suffered a major blow in May 2011 when U.S. forces located and killed bin Laden in Pakistan. His death removed the movement’s most prominent leader and disrupted its central command structure, leading to internal fragmentation and a decline in coordinated large‑scale operations.
Around the same period, the rise of the Islamic State (IS) introduced a rival jihadist entity that competed with al Qaeda for recruits, funding and operational dominance. IS’s rapid territorial gains in Iraq and Syria drew attention and resources away from al Qaeda, further weakening the latter’s capacity to orchestrate attacks on a comparable scale.
Despite these setbacks, analysts note that al Qaeda continues to function as a source of ideological support and operational inspiration for militant groups, particularly in parts of Africa where its affiliates remain active. The network’s enduring presence underscores its ability to adapt and persist even as its leadership and global prominence have diminished.
