Donald Trump arrives in Ireland for two-day visit

President Donald Trump has arrived in Ireland for a two-day visit that includes both official meetings and personal engagements. Upon his arrival in Dublin, the President held a courtesy call with Irish President Catherine Connolly at the official residence, Áras an Uachtaráin. He also met with Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park to discuss bilateral matters.

During his meeting with the Taoiseach, President Trump commented on the prospect of a united Ireland, stating that he would "love to see it unified" and predicting that such an outcome would happen eventually. He suggested that the process could potentially move forward now, describing the Taoiseach as the right person to facilitate that progress. While acknowledging that the United Kingdom would have a role in the matter, the President characterized a unified Ireland as a "fantastic thing."

The President’s remarks drew immediate responses from political leaders in Northern Ireland. Gavin Robinson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), stated that Northern Ireland’s constitutional future is a matter to be decided by its own people rather than by commentary from Washington, Dublin, or London. Robinson emphasized that Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom due to the "settled democratic will of its people" and expressed confidence that this preference would continue.

As the President conducted his meetings, a large crowd gathered in central Dublin to protest his presence in the country. Demonstrators assembled at the Garden of Remembrance, carrying banners and flags while chanting slogans expressing opposition to the visit.

The President’s itinerary for the remainder of his trip includes travel to the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament on Saturday. The visit, which balances diplomatic meetings with private interests, continues to draw significant public and political attention across the region.
