Australian woman dies after falling 80 m from Kelingking Beach cliff on Nusa Penida, Bali

An Australian woman has died after falling from a cliff at a popular tourist beach on Nusa Penida island near Bali, local authorities have reported.

Police and emergency services reported she was found stranded on the southern side of Kelingking Beach cliff on Saturday morning, local time.

Emergency services were sent to the scene; however, the woman fell from the steep cliff before they could reach her, the reports say.

"According to information from the field, the victim is estimated to have fallen around 9am," Nusa Penida Alert Unit coordinator Cakra Negara said in a statement.

"At that time, the victim was looking for an independent route to the edge of the cliff before slipping and falling into the ravine."

Klungkung Police official Iptu I Dewa Nyoman Alit Purnawibawa said the woman's body was found on the beach, the Bali Times reported.

Mr Negara said an evacuation by sea was cancelled due to high tides and instead the woman's body was carried up the steep and narrow stairs to the Kelingking Beach viewing area, in an hour-and-a-half-long operation.

A medical examination afterwards at Griya Medica Clinic on Nusa Penida island found she had suffered several fractures and other injuries.

Kelingking Beach is one of the most popular destinations for Bali tourists, with a lookout at the top of the cliff offering panoramic views of the coast nicknamed "T-Rex Beach".

Construction of a 182-metre elevator down to the beach had been taking place until the works were suspended late last year, amid widespread opposition from tourists and local politicians.

More than 6.9 million international visitors went to Bali last year, according to the Bali Hotels Association, with Australians making up the largest cohort of those visitors at 23 per cent.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
