Runway excursions, which occur when an aircraft departs the runway surface during takeoff or landing, remain the most common type of aviation accident. These incidents present significant safety risks, particularly at airports where space is constrained by surrounding infrastructure, residential areas, or bodies of water. A notable example of the dangers involved occurred in 1984, when a Scandinavian Airlines DC-10 overshot a runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport during inclement weather. The aircraft skidded 600 feet off the pavement and into a creek, though all 177 people on board survived.
Following that incident, officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey sought engineering solutions to mitigate the risks associated with runway overruns. Because JFK was geographically hemmed in by dense housing and open water, expanding the length of the runways was not a viable option. The challenge required finding a way to safely decelerate an aircraft that had already left the paved surface.
To address this, a specialized task force was assembled to explore innovative safety measures. The group included aviation experts alongside professionals with experience in managing runaway vehicles and trains, such as those who designed runaway truck ramps. This interdisciplinary approach aimed to adapt existing deceleration technology for the unique requirements of commercial aviation.
The collaborative effort led to the development of new safety systems designed to bring overrunning aircraft to a controlled stop. These initiatives eventually prompted widespread changes in infrastructure standards at airports across the United States. By implementing these engineered safety zones, authorities have sought to reduce the potential for fatalities and structural damage when planes are unable to stop within the designated runway length.
