Kimi Antonelli wins Spanish Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth victory of the Formula One season at the Spanish Grand Prix held at Madrid’s new circuit. The 20-year-old Italian’s win in the 14th round of the championship extends his lead to 81 points over his closest rival and teammate, George Russell, who finished the race in fifth place. Antonelli currently holds 292 points in the standings, while Russell has 211.

The race saw pole-sitter Lando Norris lead the early stages, but a calamitous pit stop on lap 16 of 57 hindered his performance. Antonelli ultimately benefited from a well-timed virtual safety car, which proved decisive on a track where overtaking was described as difficult. Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished the race in second place, with Norris rounding out the podium in third.

Following the race, Antonelli acknowledged the role fortune played in his victory, stating that while he was pleased with the result, he felt Norris had performed well enough to deserve the win. Antonelli had faced challenges early in the event, twice being required to return the lead to Norris on the opening lap after going off-track and gaining an advantage.

Norris expressed disappointment with the outcome, noting that he felt he had driven a perfect race. He attributed the loss to a lack of luck, stating that there was nothing he could do to overcome the circumstances that unfolded during the pit stop phase. The event marked the first time the Spanish Grand Prix has been held at the new Madrid circuit.
