Oman postpones scheduled meeting between Iran and Gulf nations

A planned meeting between Iran and several Gulf nations, originally scheduled for September 14 in the Omani city of Salalah, has been postponed. The gathering was intended to facilitate discussions on regional stability, including potential agreements regarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global chokepoint for energy exports.

Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, announced the delay on social media, stating that the decision was made in the interests of consensus. He reaffirmed a commitment to fostering dialogue aimed at supporting regional stability and long-term cooperation.

Regarding the cause of the postponement, reports from Iranian state media indicate that the decision was made jointly by Tehran and Muscat following requests from certain regional countries. An Iranian foreign ministry official cited by the Fars news agency confirmed the joint decision but did not specify which nations had requested the delay.

The proposed meeting had been the subject of significant diplomatic activity in recent weeks, including negotiations between Tehran and Muscat. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously described the event as an important step toward building trust between the involved parties.

Prior to the postponement, Iran had indicated that any potential agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz would not constitute a full reopening of the waterway. Tehran maintained that it would retain the authority to decide which vessels are permitted to transit the strait.

The diplomatic efforts leading up to the scheduled meeting included a rare public discussion between Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed Al Nahyan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of a recent summit. These talks were part of a broader push by Oman to bring together foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council to address maritime security and regional cooperation.
