Philippines' Bangsamoro region holds first parliamentary elections

Voters in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in the southern Philippines are participating in the region's first parliamentary elections. The vote marks a significant milestone in the transition toward self-governance for the Muslim-majority region, which was formally established in 2019 following decades of conflict and rebellion. More than 2.3 million people are eligible to cast ballots in this historic process.

The election will determine the composition of the 80-seat regional parliament. The legislative body is structured to include 40 representatives from political parties, 32 representatives from various districts, and eight sectoral representatives. Once the parliament is seated, members will convene for their first session to elect a chief minister, who will lead the region's executive branch.

Election officials have expressed a goal of achieving a voter turnout of at least 80 percent. The elections were originally scheduled to take place earlier but were postponed for several years, leading many residents to view the current polling as a long-awaited opportunity to select leadership focused on establishing lasting peace in the region.

Despite the significance of the event, the lead-up to the vote was affected by violence. On the day before polls opened, a shooting in Cotabato City resulted in three deaths and 15 injuries. In response to the instability, the Commission on Elections placed Cotabato City under its direct control. Reports also indicated that a blast occurred in the city as part of the broader security concerns surrounding the election period.
