Indonesia searches for over 120 missing after ferry capsizes in Java Sea

Rescuers in Indonesia are conducting an intensive search for more than 100 people missing after a ferry capsized in the Java Sea. The vessel, identified as the Virgo Transport 8, encountered rough weather while traveling between the islands of Java and Borneo.

The ferry departed from Surabaya, a major city in East Java, carrying a total of 243 people, consisting of 213 passengers and 30 crew members. Contact with the vessel was lost early Sunday morning.

As of Monday, authorities confirmed that six people have died in the incident. A total of 108 individuals were rescued on Sunday following the capsizing.

The national search and rescue agency reported that 129 people remain missing. Efforts to locate survivors are currently underway, with officials coordinating a large-scale response.

The search operation involves the deployment of five aircraft and 17 vessels, including navy warships. Divers have also been sent to the area to assist in the recovery efforts.

The search is currently focused on the waters surrounding the location where the ferry capsized. Officials continue to monitor the area as the operation proceeds.
