Germany to order fourth signals intelligence ship

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced on Monday that the government plans to order a fourth signals intelligence ship. The announcement was made during a keel-laying ceremony for the third vessel of the same class, which is currently under construction in the northeastern town of Wolgast.

The procurement process is moving forward, with the draft budget for the additional ship currently being prepared for submission to parliament for final approval. These vessels are being constructed by Rheinmetall as part of a new class of intelligence-gathering ships for the German navy.

Minister Pistorius emphasized the strategic importance of these ships, describing them as essential tools for maintaining situational awareness in an increasingly deteriorating security environment. He noted that the vessels are designed to function as the navy's eyes and ears at sea, capable of perceiving and analyzing a vast range of signals and sounds that would otherwise remain undetected.

The German navy is scheduled to begin taking delivery of this new class of signals intelligence ships starting in 2029. The expansion of the fleet is intended to enhance the country's maritime surveillance capabilities as part of broader defense modernization efforts.
