England and Sri Lanka have begun their three-match T20 international series at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, with Sri Lanka winning the toss and electing to bowl first. The match marks the beginning of a white-ball assignment that will continue with fixtures in Cardiff and Manchester before the teams transition to an ODI series.
England has confirmed that Aneurin Donald will make his T20 international debut in the series opener. The 29-year-old batter, who has been selected to partner captain Jos Buttler at the top of the order, earned his call-up following a strong domestic season. Donald recorded 489 runs in the Vitality Blast and performed well for the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, demonstrating power-hitting capabilities that included a tournament-high 37 sixes in the Blast.
The hosts are managing their squad availability for the series, with Phil Salt ruled out of the three-match assignment due to a quad injury. Additionally, fast bowler Jofra Archer has been rested for the opening game following his participation in the recent Test series against Pakistan.
Sri Lanka has opted for a spin-heavy strategy for the opening encounter, including Dunith Wellalage in their side. The visitors have also confirmed the return of Dasun Shanaka, who slots back into the team in the role of an allrounder.
The series is scheduled to proceed with the second T20 international in Cardiff this Thursday, followed by the final match at Emirates Old Trafford on Saturday. Following the conclusion of the T20 series, the two teams are set to begin a three-match ODI series in Durham on September 22.
