Seven former Australian cricket captains issue humanitarian plea for Imran Khan

Seven former Australian cricket captains have written to Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong to express humanitarian concerns regarding the ongoing detention of former Pakistan prime minister and World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan. The signatories to the letter are Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor, and Steve Waugh.

The group stated that they are writing not as diplomats or political figures, but as former captains who feel compelled to address the situation. They explicitly clarified that they are not taking a position on the legal or political cases against Khan, maintaining that such matters are for Pakistan alone to resolve. Instead, they framed their appeal as a matter of basic humanity regarding the treatment of any individual in detention, regardless of their political background.

The letter highlights concerns previously raised by Khan’s family, including his sons and sisters, regarding his conditions at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The signatories noted reports of limited medical care, restricted contact with family members, and minimal access to legal counsel for the 73-year-old, who has been incarcerated since 2023 following convictions in corruption cases.

The appeal to Minister Wong follows a series of similar requests from other prominent figures in the cricketing world regarding Khan's treatment. According to reports, Greg Chappell had previously requested a meeting with the Foreign Minister on behalf of the group to discuss the matter, though he has not yet received a response.

This intervention by the former Australian captains marks the latest development in international advocacy concerning Khan's welfare.
