A Russian frigate fired two flares toward a Danish military helicopter while operating in international waters off the coast of Denmark on Monday. The Danish defence command reported that the Fennec helicopter was conducting a routine mission to photograph the Russian vessel when the incident occurred. According to officials, one of the flares passed in close proximity to the aircraft, narrowly missing it.

Flares are pyrotechnic devices typically utilized as warning signals at sea. The Russian embassy did not immediately provide a response to requests for comment regarding the event.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the actions as unacceptable, noting that the incident had the potential to endanger human lives. He stated that Denmark is committed to ensuring peaceful passage for all shipping in Danish waters, but argued that Russia is increasingly pushing the boundaries of acceptable behavior. In response to the encounter, the Danish government has summoned the Russian ambassador for a meeting.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen characterized the event as a serious matter, though she noted it was not entirely unexpected. She described the incident as part of a broader pattern of behavior, asserting that Russia is intensifying hybrid warfare against Europe and testing the resolve of NATO. She added that the Russian government aims to sow fear and discord, and that the appropriate response is to strengthen the defense of Denmark and Europe.

The Baltic Sea region has remained on high alert following a series of incidents since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Tensions between Moscow and Western nations have been heightened by reports of gas pipeline outages, airspace violations, and frequent drone sightings in the area. These types of incidents are often categorized as hybrid attacks, which are defined as acts of aggression that fall short of conventional warfare.
