Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci sentenced to 25 years for war crimes

Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The verdict was delivered by a special tribunal based in The Hague, which examined actions taken during the territory’s violent conflict with Serbia in the 1990s. Thaci, 58, served as a top commander of the ethnic Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the period in question.

The court convicted Thaci on multiple counts, including murder, torture, cruel treatment, and illegal detention. According to the tribunal, Thaci was criminally responsible for the murder of 96 political opponents and individuals perceived as collaborators with Serbian security forces. Additionally, the court found him responsible for the arbitrary detention of 385 people, the torture of 303 individuals, and the cruel treatment of approximately 50 others.

Presiding judge Charles Smith stated that the court found Thaci had actively participated in and encouraged these crimes. The judge noted that the intelligence used to justify the arrest and detention of victims often consisted of little more than unverified rumors, which led to individuals being labeled as spies and subjected to violent treatment. The court emphasized that the scale and nature of the offenses were very serious.

Thaci, who had consistently denied all charges throughout the proceedings, stood in silence as the conviction and sentence were read. He faced these charges alongside three other former KLA figures. The sentencing marks a significant conclusion to the tribunal's investigation into the actions of the KLA leadership during the conflict that led to Kosovo's break from Serbia.
