Belarus releases 25 prisoners following US-mediated sanctions relief

Belarusian authorities have released 25 prisoners following a diplomatic agreement reached between the government in Minsk and the United States. The deal was announced on Wednesday by John Coale, the U.S. special envoy for Belarus, following direct discussions with President Alexander Lukashenko.

Under the terms of the agreement, the United States will lift sanctions currently imposed on two Belarusian companies, Lakokraska and Bellesbumprom. Coale described the arrangement as an interim measure and a gesture of good will, noting that both parties are working toward further prisoner releases and additional sanctions relief as negotiations continue.

In a statement posted to social media, the U.S. special envoy credited the results to the current administration's commitment to direct diplomacy. Coale expressed gratitude toward President Lukashenko and officials in Lithuania, a neighboring European Union member state, for their assistance in facilitating the process. He emphasized that the current releases are not the end of the initiative, stating that efforts to secure the freedom of more individuals are ongoing.

President Lukashenko, who has led Belarus for over three decades, has consistently pushed for the removal of all remaining American sanctions against his country. While the U.S. envoy characterized the talks as significant progress for bilateral relations, Belarusian state media confirmed the lifting of sanctions on the two specific firms involved in the deal.

Western nations have maintained various sanctions against Belarus for years, citing the country's domestic human rights record and its role in allowing Russian forces to utilize its territory during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. As of Wednesday, Belarusian authorities had not yet released specific details regarding the identities or status of the 25 individuals freed under the new agreement.
