US Envoy Expects Further Prisoner Releases in Belarus

The United States envoy to Belarus, John Coale, has expressed expectations that the Belarusian government will release hundreds of additional prisoners during his next visit to the country. Coale indicated that he plans to return to Minsk in approximately one month to continue negotiations regarding the status of detainees.

This announcement follows an agreement reached on Wednesday in which Belarus committed to the release of 25 prisoners. In exchange for these releases, the United States has agreed to a further easing of existing sanctions against the nation.

The diplomatic efforts are part of a broader push by Washington to secure the freedom of individuals held within Belarus. The categories of prisoners currently being discussed include political activists, human rights campaigners, and other detained persons.

While the immediate release involves 25 individuals, the U.S. envoy has stated he is confident that a significantly larger number of prisoners will be secured in the future. Coale noted that while the exact figure remains uncertain, his hope is to facilitate the release of hundreds of people during his upcoming diplomatic mission.
