Sweden's centre-left opposition maintains narrow election lead

Sweden's centre-left opposition has moved into a position to defeat the incumbent right-wing governing bloc following the country's recent parliamentary election. With 99 percent of the votes counted, the opposition led by Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson is projected to secure 175 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag.

The incumbent governing bloc, led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and including the Sweden Democrats, is currently on track to win 174 seats. The margin between the two sides remains narrow, with only 26,169 votes separating the blocs as of Wednesday afternoon.

Public broadcaster SVT has indicated that the likelihood of a reversal in the results is minimal, stating that the opposition is expected to secure the majority of seats. This outcome would signal a change in government for Sweden.

The national election authority is continuing to process remaining ballots, including those cast from home and abroad. While the majority of the count is complete, the agency has noted that the final tallying process may continue until Thursday before all votes are fully accounted for.
