Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirms commitment to complete legislative term

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Wednesday that she intends to remain in office until the end of the current legislative term. Speaking at a news conference following a cabinet meeting, she dismissed media speculation suggesting she might call for an early election before her term expires next autumn.

Meloni expressed pride in the stability of her administration, which recently became the longest-serving government in Italy since World War Two. She emphasized her commitment to continuing to govern as long as she maintains a strong and solid majority, appearing alongside her coalition partners, Deputy Prime Ministers Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani.

The Prime Minister leads a conservative coalition consisting of her Brothers of Italy party, the League, and Forza Italia. Her comments come amid reports of a surge in support for National Future, a new far-right movement led by former general Roberto Vannacci. This development has reportedly impacted backing for Meloni’s coalition and fueled rumors that she might seek a snap election to preempt further declines in support.

Despite the Prime Minister's stated goal of stability, the coalition has faced challenges in recent months. Observers have noted that the governing alliance’s path has not always been smooth, suggesting potential friction within the partnership as the next election cycle approaches.

One instance of these legislative difficulties occurred in July, when the lower house of parliament unexpectedly rejected a government amendment linked to electoral reform.
