Peter Max, Psychedelic Pop Art Icon of the 1960s, Dead at 88

Peter Max, the celebrated psychedelic pop‑art artist whose vibrant, swirling imagery became synonymous with the optimism of the 1960s, died on Monday at the age of 88. His son, Adam Max, announced the death in a written statement on Wednesday, noting that no cause of death was provided.

Born Peter Max Finkelstein in Berlin in 1937 to a Jewish family, he fled Nazi Germany as an infant, first to Shanghai and later living in Tibet, Israel and Paris before his family settled in New York City when he was 16 years old.

In New York, Max pursued formal art training at the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts and the Pratt Institute. He later described himself as a “huge fan of American culture,” drawing inspiration from comics, films and jazz music.

Max’s career spanned more than six decades, during which his bright, psychedelic style appeared on a wide range of commercial and cultural products. His work was featured on postage stamps, posters, a Boeing 777 aircraft and a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, among other venues.

He also served as the official artist for several major sporting and international events, including the Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, the Indianapolis 500, the FIFA World Cup and the World Series, cementing his presence in American visual culture.

Adam Max said the family will remember his “extraordinary creativity, his warmth, his curiosity, and the way he saw beauty and possibility everywhere.” He added that while Max’s art will remain part of the cultural landscape, the father and husband behind the work is the person the family will miss most.
