Tribe hotel opens in Auckland offering affordable, stylish accommodation

Housed in a sleek seven-storey building on Fort Street in Auckland’s CBD, this 60-room property opened in October 2025, making it the New Zealand debut of Accor’s affordable, design-driven brand, Tribe. Originally launched in Perth in 2017, Tribe has since expanded to 27 hotels across 15 countries. Similar to Moxy and CitizenM, it appeals to tech-savvy travellers who crave functional, welcoming spaces but don’t want to pay for unnecessary bells and whistles.

In a word: funky. Think boulder-shaped pink seats in the lobby and a dazzling spherical gold artwork by the lifts. Even the corridors have personality, with dark blue walls, black-and-white barcode-style carpet and distorting psychedelic mirrors. Things calm down in Sienna, the property’s ground-floor all-day eatery and lounge, where a relaxing palette of light woods and speckled stonework is softened by pot plants suspended from an exposed industrial ceiling.

There are five room categories, ranging from windowless, 15-square-metre Tribe Essentials to spacious 25-square-metre suites with “city views” (aka the surrounding office blocks). All feature the same vibrant decor – bright blue walls, abstract prints and red, white and grey geometric carpet – along with compact tiled en suites with rain showers and refillable Kevin Murphy amenities. Tribe’s guiding ethos is “everything you need and nothing you don’t”, so while you can expect a comfortable queen bed, Nespresso machine, bar fridge and smart TV, you won’t find a bathrobe, mini-bar or pillow menu. There are a few space-saving compromises, such as wall-mounted hangers instead of a wardrobe and a handheld steamer rather than an ironing board, but overall the focus is on premium practicality. Laudable sustainability initiatives include reusable glass bottles in every room and a water dispenser on each floor. Guests can also skip housekeeping to earn 100 Accor reward points.

Sienna offers an all-day menu of Southern California-influenced dishes, from a fabulous smashed avo brekkie featuring yuzu and green chilli avocado, to meaty tuna tostadas and tasty pork rib quesadillas for dinner. It’s a light, airy venue that works better during the day, when large sliding doors let in the buzz of the CBD. While it lacks atmosphere at night, the 4pm to 6pm happy hour ($NZ12 [$9.70] cocktails and $NZ10 beers) makes a great springboard for exploring excellent nearby eateries like Bossi, Mr Morris and Amano. There’s also a 24/7 “grab-and-go” counter with freshly made sandwiches, salads and juices.

I notice a marked improvement in Auckland’s CBD compared to my last visit in early 2025, when the Queen Street precinct was marred by vacant shops, construction and people sleeping rough. It has a much more appealing energy now, with after-work activity helping to revitalise the nightlife. From the hotel, you’re not far from Queen Street’s big-brand stores, Britomart’s independent boutiques and the buzzy Aotea Square, which often hosts markets, festivals and outdoor performances. Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter are a 15-minute stroll away, and it’s easy to forget how lovely these areas are at night, when the illuminated skyline provides a striking backdrop for the flotilla of sleek yachts and gleaming powerboats.

A well-positioned, wallet-friendly property with all the essentials and none of the frills.
