UN mission reports potential war crimes by US and crimes against humanity by Iran

A United Nations fact-finding mission has reported that there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes during its conflict with Iran. In a recent report submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, three independent experts highlighted that civilians in Iran are currently facing both crimes against humanity perpetrated by their own government and the consequences of the ongoing military conflict involving the United States and Israel.

The investigation focused on two of the most lethal attacks on civilians since the conflict began on February 28. One of the primary incidents examined was a missile strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in the town of Minab. Local authorities reported that at least 156 people were killed in the attack, including 120 children.

According to the UN experts, the school was located adjacent to a naval complex belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that was also targeted during the operation. However, the mission stated that the school was clearly identifiable and there was no evidence to suggest the facility was being utilized for military purposes at the time of the strike.

The experts concluded that the school was the intended target of the impact rather than a case of collateral damage. Based on their assessment of the evidence, they determined there are reasonable grounds to believe the strike was carried out by the United States. This conclusion was supported by the fact that the U.S. is the only party in the conflict equipped with Tomahawk missiles, as well as media reports suggesting a preliminary U.S. military inquiry had already identified U.S. forces as responsible for the incident.

The mission’s report serves as an assessment of the conduct of the parties involved in the regional conflict. While the experts pointed to the actions of the United States regarding the school strike, they also emphasized that the Iranian government is responsible for separate, ongoing human rights violations and crimes against humanity affecting its own civilian population.
